June 2018 e.v. Bulletin

Do what thou wilt is the whole of the Law

The Sun is in Gemini, Luna waning to third quarter in Capricorn. The seventh of this month is the Feast of the Gnostic Saint Carl Kellner, in many ways the spiritual father or our Order. He was a student of Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism and Eastern mysticism, and travelled extensively in Europe, America and Asia Minor. During his travels, he claimed to have come into contact with the the Hermetic Brotherhood of Light and three eastern Adepts, a Sufi, Soliman ben Aifa, and two Hindu Tantrics, Bhima Sena Pratapa of Lahore and Sri Mahatma Agamya Paramahamsa. These adepts are attributed with having initiated Kellner into the use of sexual yogas in magick.

Saint Carl believed that he had discovered a key that offered a clear explanation of all the complex symbolism of Freemasonry, and opened the mysteries of Nature. He developed a desire to form an Academia Masonica which would enable all Freemasons to become familiar with all existing Masonic degrees and systems and decided that the Academia Masonica should be called Ordo Templi Orientis. His vision was of an occult inner circle of this order being organised parallel to the highest degrees of the Rite of Memphis-Misraim, teaching the esoteric Rosicrucian doctrines of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Light and the key he thought he had discovered to all Masonic symbolism. Both men and women would be admitted at all levels to this order.

This month is also the month of the Summer Solstice. The Sun remains in Gemini until the day of the solstice itself on the 21st. Gemini is ruled by Mercury and Atu VI, The Lovers – or: The Brothers – refers to Gemini. In the Book of Thoth, The Master Therion explains the sign of the twins as the story of Cain. Atus VI & XIV, are seen themselves as twins with each of the symbols in itself double and regarded by him as:

“..the most obscure and difficult of the Atu.” See especially the earlier description of Atu VI “..in its more primitive form..”

Liber 418 The Vision and the Voice, The Cry of the 2nd Aethyr, which is called ARN.

The key of Atu VI is seen to be that it represents the Creation of the World. In this dualism, the material world is seen as a reflection and the sign of Gemini as expanding on that dualism.

A few days after the solstice and the entry of Sol into the sign of Cancer, the 24th of the month is the Feast of St. John. In masonic symbolism, there is also the pairing of the two Johns, the baptist and the evangelist. In the interlocked six-pointed star in a form like the Golden Dawn Hexagram of Nature, St John the Baptist is represented by the inverted triangle pointing downward, the alchemical sign of water, symbolising emotional love ruled by the moon and St. John the Evangelist, whose feast celebrated on 27 December, a few days after Sol enters Capricorn and the winter solstice, is represented by the upward pointing triangle symbolising fire, the drive and will of action. When brought together, they symbolise the perfect balance of darkness and light, life and death, passion and constraint, will and emotion, summer and winter, Cancer and Capricorn.

In the Thelemic Holy Hexagram, the water and fire symbolism is reversed relative to the Hexagram of Nature:

“…the Red Triangle is the descending tongue of grace; the Blue Triangle is the ascending tongue of prayer.”

The Book of Lies, Chapter 69.

In his commentary on this Chapter, Crowley writes:

“This chapter alludes to Levi’s drawing of the Hexagram, and is a criticism of, or improvement upon, it. In the ordinary Hexagram, the Hexagram of Nature, the red triangle is upwards, like fire, and the blue triangle downwards, like water. In the magical hexagram this is reversed; the descending red triangle is that of Horus, a sign specially revealed by him personally, at the Equinox of the Gods. (it is the flame descending upon the altar, licking up the offering.) The blue triangle represents the aspiration, since blue is the colour of devotion, and the triangle, kinetically considered, is the symbol of directed force.”

May 2018 e.v. Bulletin

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Sol is Taurus and Luna is waning in Sagittarius, just after full.

The Feast of Cattle, where Osiris is the pertinent godform, has been celebrated. It is the month of Beltane fires and the festival of Floralia. The Hierophant is the card referred to Taurus in the Thoth Tarot. Before the figure of the Hierophant is a woman girt with a sword, representing the Scarlet Woman.

May 23rd is the anniversary of the Apparition of the Daughter of Fortitude, Edward Kelly’s vision pertaining to Our Lady Babalon, recevied whilst scrying in the seventh Aethyr of DEO on that day, 413 years ago in 1587 e.v.

Dee’s journal for Saturday, May 23, 1587 e.v. records:

“Here cometh another woman: All her attire is like beaten gold; she hath on her forehead a Cross chrystal, her neck and breast are bare unto under her dugs: She hath a girdle of beaten gold slackly buckled unto her with a pendant of gold down to the ground.”

“I am the daughter of Fortitude, and ravished every hour, from my youth. For behold, I am Understanding, and Science dwelleth in me; and the heavens oppress me. They covet and desire me with infinite appetite; few or none that are earthly have embraced me, for I am shadowed with the Circle of the Stone, and covered with the morning Clouds. My feet are swifter than the winds, and my hands are sweeter than the morning dew. My garments are from the beginning, and my dwelling place is in my self. The Lion knoweth not where I walk, neither do the beasts of the field understand me. I am deflowered, and yet a virgin; I sanctify, and am not sanctified. Happy is he that embraceth me: for in the night season I am sweet, and in the day full of pleasure. My company is a harmony of many Cymbals, and my lips sweeter than health itself. I am a harlot for such as ravish me, and a virgin with such as know me not: For Lo, I am loved of many, and I am a lover to many; and as many as come unto me as they should do, have entertainment. Purge your streets, O ye sons of men, and wash your houses clean; make yourselves holy, and put on righteousness. Cast out your old strumpets, and burn their clothes; abstain from the company of other women that are defiled, that are sluttish, and not so handsome and beautiful as I, and then will I come and dwell amongst you: and behold, I will bring forth children unto you, and they shall be the sons of Comfort. I will open my garments, and stand naked before you, that your love may be more enflamed toward me. As yet, I walk in the clouds; as yet, I am carried with the winds, and cannot descend unto you for the multitude of your abominations, and the filthy loathsomeness of your dwelling places.”

Crowley considered Kelly to be one of his previous incarnations: see Chapters 73 and 187 of Liber Aleph and Part III of The Heart of the Master.

The Vision and the Voice, Liber 418 is a record of Crowley’s use of the Thirty Aethyrs of the Enochian system of magic, channelled through Dee and Kelley, to explore some of the most subtle planes of magickal and mystical experience. The Vision and the Voice is the source of some of the central spiritual doctrines of Thelema as revealed in the visions of Babalon. The sublime visions that resulted were the culmination of Crowley’s initiation into the grade of Magister Templi. These visions also contain the seeds of the Atu of the Book of Thoth.

The enigmatic Gnostic text Thunder Perfect Mind has strong resonances with the voices of Madimi and Babalon that appeared to Dee and Kelly. Thunder Perfect Mind is an exhortatory poem, written well before 350 e.v., but not discovered among the Gnostic manuscripts at Nag Hammadi until 1945 e.v. It also resonates strongly with the voice of Nuit in Chapter One of Liber AL vel Legis.

April 2018 e.v. Bulletin

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

This month’s forthcoming Feast for the Three Days of the Writing of the Book of the Law marks the 114th anniversary of the reception of Liber AL vel Legis: The Book of the Law and concludes the Thelemic Holy Season for this year, which began at the Vernal Equinox on 20 March.

The Book of the Law was received by Aleister Crowley, one chapter per day from the 8 to10 April 1904, between the hours of noon and 1:00 pm. As he sat at his desk in Cairo, the voice of Aiwass, the messenger of Horus, came from over his left shoulder.

The first chapter is from Nuit, the Egyptian goddess of the night sky, called the Queen of Space. Crowley called her the:

“Lady of the Starry Heaven, who is also Matter in its deepest metaphysical sense, who is the infinite in whom all we live and move and have our being.”

The second is from Hadit, who refers to himself as the “complement of Nu,” his bride. As such, he is the infinitely condensed point, the centre of her infinite circumference:

“He is eternal energy, the Infinite Motion of Things, the central core of all being.”

The third is from Ra-Hoor-Khuit, “a god of War and of Vengeance”, also identified as Hoor-paar-kraat, the Crowned and Conquering Child:

“…we have Nuit, Space, Hadit, the point of view; these experience congress, and so produce Heru-Ra-Ha, who combines the ideas of Ra-Hoor-Khuit and Hoor-paar-Kraat.”

Liber AL vel Legis: The Book of the Law is the founding text of Thelema. In Ch. II, v. 38 it is declared: “A feast for the three days of the writing of the Book of the Law.” The days of the Book’s reception are here to be celebrated! It is a Thelemic custom to read each chapter on the day it was received, with a celebration at noon.

PUBLIC READING & DECLARATION
The Atlantis Bookshop, 49A Museum St, London WC1A 1LY will as Liber AL vel Legisusual be marking the three-day Feast for the Writing of the Book of the Law with a public reading and declaration of a Chapter of the Book of the Law on each of the three days, this coming Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, 8, 9 & 10 April, starting at 12.00 noon each day.

Anno Viv – Warmest Greetings on the Equinox of the Gods

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

From the Master and Officers of AMeTh Lodge, warmest greetings on the Equinox of the Gods, The Vernal Equinox, the beginning of the Thelemic New Year and Thelemic Holy Season!

Each Thelemic year starts at the instant of the northern-hemisphere Vernal Equinox, coinciding today with the Thelemic holiday called the Feast for the Equinox of the Gods.

The Equinox of the Gods is celebrated on the Vernal Equinox and as the Feast for the Supreme Ritual is always celebrated on March 20, they usually fall no more than two days apart from one another and quite often coincide on the same day, as they do this year. The two share a single line in The Book of the Law, II.40 :

“A feast for the Supreme Ritual, and a feast for the Equinox of the Gods.”

Today, we begin our holiday with a celebration of the Feast for the Supreme Ritual : The Invocation of Horus, taking place at 12.30pm, Anno V:iii : ☉ 29º ♓︎: ☽ 6º ♉︎ prior to the Vernal Equinox, The Equinox of the Gods, and the beginning of the Thelemic New Year at 4.15pm GMT : Anno V:iv : ☉ 0º 0′ ♈︎: ☽ 8º 36′ ♉︎

The Thelemic Holy Season is recognised as the period of twenty-two days falling between the common dates of today, March 20 and April 10, the Third Day of the Writing of the Book of the Law. Thelemites observing this Season variously attribute the Thelemic New Year to March 20, or the First or Third day of the Three Days of the Writing of the Book of the Law. Some have treated this Season as existing outside any “year,” in the conventional sense, or as one long, twenty-two day Thelemic New Year.

(Source: http://www.thelemapedia.org/index.php/Aries)

Each of the twenty-two days of the Thelemic Holy Season, from March 20 through to April 10, can be attributed to one of the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet – starting today with The Universe and working back to the The Fool on April 10. You could on each of these days, prominently display the corresponding Tarot Trump and meditate, do appropriate rituals, or other engage in other recollections and recognitions of the principle of the image. Some conduct a twenty-two day pathworking in the appropriate order based on each of the Thoth Tarot Atu on the Tree of Life.

Whatever you do, celebrate with force and fire and most of all, enjoy!

March 2018 e.v. Bulletin

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

The Sun is in Pisces and remains there until the Vernal Equinox, The Equinox of the Gods and beginning of the Thelemic New Year on the 20th of this month. Luna goes full tomorrow at 00.51, the last Full Moon before the Equinox. The New Moon is on the 17th.

The Thoth Tarot card that represents Pisces in the Zodiac is Atu XVIII : The Moon. As we are in the last icy, cold grip of winter, awaiting the Vernal Equinox, the return of the spring and the coming Thelemic New Year, the symbolism of the Egyptian Khephra, the sacred Beetle, that leaps out from the imagery of this Atu. Rising from the water at the bottom of the card’s image, Khephra is bearing in his mandibles the Solar Disk: “It is this Beetle that bears the Sun in his Silence through the darkness of Night and the bitterness of Winter.”

In the external world, the card can represent both midnight in the cycle of the day and the end of the winter in the cycle of the year. Internally, the metaphorical dark hours before the dawn of mystical attainment or realisation, the sleep-like suffering of ignorance prior to the moment of awakening.

“Witch-moon of blood, eternal ebb and flow
Of baffled birth, in death still lurks a change;
And all the leopards in thy woods that range,
And all the vampires in their boughs that glow,
Brooding on blood-thirst-these are not so strange
And fierce as life’s unfailing shower. These die,
Yet time rebears them through eternity.”

– Book of Lies
Pointing beyond the illusory dualism of the apparent horrors and abominations of the darkness as contrasted with the emergence into light, the Master Therion urges us to see the oft dreaded Dark Night of the Soul more profoundly as part of a “..splendid Adventure!”

Guest Lecture – Tibetan Thanatology

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Lodge members are invited for a very special guest talk at 4pm next Saturday, 24 February to attend a lecture by Frater Secare on the fascinating subject of Tibetan Thanatology.

Abandon your notions of the past, without attributing a temporal sequence! Cut off your mental associations regarding the future, without anticipation! Rest in a spacious modality, without clinging to [the thoughts of] the present. Do not meditate at all, since there is nothing upon which to meditate. Instead, revelation will come through undistracted mindfulness — Since there is nothing by which you can be distracted.

– Bardo Thodol

This lecture aims to give a concrete and broad overview of the practices associated with death in the Tibetan traditions and topics covered will include:
  • The axiom of death, and its psychological, existential, and occult implications.
  • Phowa, the intentional separation of body and consciousness
  • Assumption of the rainbow body.
  • Dream- and sleep yoga; lucid dreams and the experience of death
  • Thukdam (postmortem meditation).
  • Sky burial.
  • Chöd.
  • Yidam in death (enlightenment through deification).
  • The Tibetan Book of the Dead.
  • Tantric self-mummification.
  • Ringsel (master relics).
  • Tulkus and emanations (reincarnation lineages).
  • The psychospiritual grammar of rebirth.
  • Bardo – the three phases of death.

Frater Secare is the President of the Proto-Electoral College of O.T.O. Sweden.

February 2018 e.v. Bulletin

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

The Sun is in Aquarius until the 18th of the month, Luna is waning gibbous following an eclipse. The Star, Atu XVII refers to Aquarius in the Zodiac and is attributed to the Hebrew letter He’.

The image in the Thoth Tarot deck represents Nuith, our Lady of the Stars. The Master Therion says in the Book of Thoth that this Atu gives the definite formula for the attainment of truth and that to comprehend the full meaning of this it is necessary to understand the first chapter of the Book of the Law, emphasising the practical importance of the conclusion of that chapter:

“I give unimaginable joys on earth: certainty, not faith, while in life, upon death; peace unutterable, rest, ecstasy; nor do I demand aught in sacrifice.

“But to love me is better than all things: if under the night-stars in the desert thou presently burnest mine incense before me, invoking me with a pure heart, and the Serpent flame therein, thou shalt come a little to lie in my bosom. For one kiss wilt thou then be willing to give all; but whoso gives one particle of dust shall lose all in that hour. Ye shall gather goods and store of women and spices; ye shall wear rich jewels; ye shall exceed the nations of the earth in splendour & pride; but always in the love of me, and so shall ye come to my joy. I charge you earnestly to come before me in a single robe, and covered with a rich headdress. I love you! I yearn to you! Pale or purple, veiled or voluptuous, I who am all pleasure and purple, and drunkenness of the innermost sense, desire you. Put on the wings, and arouse the coiled splendour within you: come unto me!

“At all my meetings with you shall the priestess say-and her eyes shall burn with desire as she stands bare and rejoicing in my secret temple -To me! To me! calling forth the flame of the hearts of all in her love-chant.

“Sing the rapturous love-song unto me! Burn to me perfumes! Wear to me jewels! Drink to me, for I love you! I love you!

“I am the blue-lidded daughter of Sunset; I am the naked brilliance of the voluptuous night-sky.

“To me! To me!

“The Manifestation of Nuit is at an end.”

ALJIII launch party: a joyous report

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Lodge members and friends of the Order gathered at the legendary Atlantis Bookshop, here in London, a few evenings ago to celebrate the long-awaited launch of the third issue of our Journal.
ALJIII Launch at Atlantis Bookshop, 26 January 2018 e.v.
During the evening, dedicated, like the Journal itself, to the memory of our Brother Wlodek, we ran a silent auction for the painting that graces the cover of the Journal, generously donated to the Lodge by the artist, Brother Asa.
Titled Divination, it’s oil on canvas, 16 x 12 inches, and framed in thin matte black. Signed and named on the back of the canvas.
Divination by Brother Asa
Divination by Brother Asa
At the end of the evening, we decided to give others the opportunity to try and win this beautiful piece of art, and the bids will continue to run for a week, ending this Saturday, 3 February 2018 e.v. at noon.
Please send your bids directly at Atlantis Bookshop, via email:
atlantis@theatlantisbookshop.com
Come back and check this post daily, or follow us and Atlantis Bookshop on Twitter, for updates on the price to beat.
We will end this update, longer than the usual, with the speech that our Editor, Frater 515, shared at the end of the evening, and to renew the “call to arms” as we are already planning Issue IV – and this time we expect it to be out way sooner!

Good evening,

Well, it’s nice to be back! One of the strangest – and perhaps most valuable – things about being away for lengthy periods of time from the place you call home is the different perspective this affords. Objects and locations from your previous everyday experience – where perhaps familiarity might have bred complacency – are seen anew. And if London – which Soror I tells me falls under Mercury’s sign of Gemini – may be called a Theatre of Initiations, then Atlantis, I think, can be described as a portal to the world of Magick. There is nowhere quite like it – certainly not in the Europe of my travels – and a list of the Adepts who have walked through these doors would read like a roll call of the Great and the Good – or, if you prefer, the Big and the Bad – of that most marvellous science and art of effecting change in accordance with Will. And, of course, Thoth, Hermes, Mercury – by whatever name I might call this aspect of the divine which is Man – is both god of Magick and of writing. So, I can think of no better place to launch this, the third issue of AMeTh Lodge Journal.

So why devote the time and energy to produce such a publication? In short, what is the willed idea behind it? Well, first and foremost – if we are doing it right – by devoting our energy and our creative and analytical capacities, this physical object, our Heh final, becomes imbued with the spirit that animates our endeavours – the so-called 93 current which used Aleister Crowley for its initial vehicle of formal expression. As such, this physical object constitutes nothing less than a talisman with which to attract those who – I paraphrase Professor Snape – might have the disposition to seek initiation into that current as manifested by O.T.O. – the first of the great Old Aeon orders to accept the Book of the Law.

Almost of equal importance, I think, is the opportunity it provides to members of AMeTh Lodge – and indeed other O.T.O. bodies in the UK – for self-expression. Magick is a living thing, its essence is change. Journals such as ours are platforms to showcase what contemporary occultists or, in our case – and I am sure I do them no wrong if I call them thus, Thelemites –  are thinking, what they are doing. There is a rawness that fully-formed books often don’t possess, a feeling of work-in- progress, similar perhaps to what you might get to visiting the studio of a painter, rather than viewing the finished work in an art gallery. And indeed, who’s to say that the act of writing out that sudden idea you get in the form of an article, or a short story, or working up that image you glimpse in your mind’s eye into a painting, might not inspire a lengthier piece of work that might, at some future date, end up as a tome that graces these very shelves, or perhaps a painting that might one day find itself next to that of Mr Mathers up there. In short, by contributing to the Journal you embark on a journey whose destination lies wreathed in mystery.

And, it’s fair to say, that just as every journey has its annoyances, the Journal has its editor one of those things that you just have to grin and bear – as you do a slightly irksome ticket inspector, or the ladies and gentleman that work in passport control at Heathrow. But if that hasn’t altogether put you off and you find your Will turning in that direction, then we’ll certainly do our very best to publish what you send us.

So what might be the impressions of the casual reader who alights on this Journal like some bibliophilic butterfly drawn into the energy net of our talisman? Well, I am certain they will be impressed. First, we have the wonderful cover picture provided by Brother Asa – who, incidentally, has generously offered the original painting for auction with the proceeds going to the Lodge. I’ll just briefly explain how this will work. We will start the auction off at £200 and will be taking sealed bids tonight. The auction will run until next Saturday (3 rd Feb) 12pm when the winning bid will be announced. Each day we will publish the current highest bid. If you wish to leave a bid, tonight you can leave a sealed bid with Bali and after tonight please get in touch with Atlantis and tell them how much you’d like to bid. So, get bidding!

To return to the Journal itself, what’s inside is pretty good too – whether this be Thaumast‘s learned exposition on Geomancy, a veritable primer on that most sublime and difficult art; Brother Dave‘s discussion of the occult history of Algol, Brother Franc‘s analysis of the notorious Heh-Tzaddi switch, or Sister Tonelise‘s insights into the nature of the Tarot Aces. And that’s not to forget the ritual material, both that of Brother Reuben, as well as that pertaining to the mysterious Lucid Dreaming Group –  just going to pinch myself here to check I’m not
dreaming: ow! – no I’m not. And besides all of that there are poems, there is artwork and there’s even a short-story, the author being a certain Luxor Tenebris – ahem, a most dubious- sounding individual, if you ask me. I’s a really wonderful collection of work – in my admittedly biased opinion – and all for the very reasonable price of £25.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every contributor to this issue of ALJ, including those who helped behind the scenes on the marketing effort. Thank you.

A special word of thanks here to two people who were absolutely instrumental in bringing this idea to manifestation. Firstly, to Soror Dahud-Ahes for her tireless help in managing the project, not least when it came to rounding up submissions from those who had – like wayward goats towards milking time – strayed from the path of punctuality, perhaps tempted by the alluring thistles of torpor. And, lastly, but most gratefully, I’d like to offer my profound thanks to Frater Lamogue whose brilliance as a designer, as a craftsman and artificer of books, shows through in every page. Without him, it just wouldn’t have been possible.

Finally, as you will all be aware, this particular issue is dedicated to Brother Wlodek, who relatively recently celebrated his Greater Feast. To paraphrase Liber XV, May there be granted unto him the accomplishment of his Will. I’ll also like to add to that: If ever there was a chap who appreciated a good party, it was him. He was a true bon viveur, a bright star.

So, on that note, I point you in the direction of the ‘vats of the storied sun’, remind you to be assiduous in your worship of Dionysus – not forgetting ‘the eight and ninety rules of art’ of course – and thank you for coming out on this rather cold London night to celebrate with us here in this place and at this time, the launch of this, the third issue of AMeTh Lodge Journal.

January 2018 e.v. Bulletin

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Greetings and best wishes for the vulgar new year!
The Sun is in the sign of Capricorn, remaining there until the 19th of this month. Luna is full. Atu XV, The Devil, refers to Capricornus in the Zodiac.
Atu XV: “…represents creative energy in its most material form; in the Zodiac, Capricornus occupies the Zenith. It is the most exalted of the signs; it is the goat leaping with lust upon the summits of earth. The sign is ruled by Saturn, who makes for selfhood and perpetuity. In this sign, Mars is exalted, showing in its best form the fiery, material energy of creation. The card represents Pan Pangenetor, the All-Begetter.”
– The Book of Thoth
The goat portrayed on the card is identified with Pan. The Sun enters Capricorn after he reaches his most extreme southern declination at the Winter Solstice and then begins his return northwards to renew the year:
“…the divine madness of spring, already foreseen in the meditative madness of winter;..”
Observation of the Sun with awareness of the facts of astronomy is a key to the New Aeon, enabling us to transcend superstition arising from the representation of our ideas in a pluralistic symbolism based upon an illusory duality.

“Thus The Devil is Capricornus, the Goat, who leaps upon the loftiest mountains, The Godhead which, if it becomes manifest in man, makes him the AEgipan, the All.”

December 2017 e.v. Bulletin

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Greetings on the day of the Seventieth Anniversary of the Prophet’s Greater Feast!

“In all the universe darkness is only to be found in the shadow of a gross and opaque planet, as it were for a moment; the universe itself is a flood of light eternal. So also death is but through accident; thou hast hidden thyself in the shadow of thy gross body, and taking it for reality, thou hast trembled.”
– Baphomet X° O.T.O.

Our Father the Sun moved into Sagittarius on 23 November and will remain there until the Solstice on 21 DecemberAtu XIV, Art pertains to Sagittarius in the Zodiac. The Moon is waxing gibbous in Taurus.

“This card is the complement and the fulfilment of Atu VI, Gemini. It pertains to Sagittarius, the opposite to Gemini in the Zodiac, and therefore, “after another manner,” one with it. Sagittarius means the Archer; and the card is, in its simplest and most primitive form, a picture of Diana the Huntress. Diana is primarily one of the lunar goddesses, though the Romans rather degraded her from the Greek “virgin Artemis”, who is also the Great Mother of Fertility, Diana of the Ephesians, Many-Breasted – a form of Isis-see Atu II and III. The connection between the Moon and the Huntress is shewn by the shape of the bow, and the occult significance of Sagittarius is the arrow piercing the rainbow; the last three paths of the Tree of Life make the word Qesheth, a rainbow, and Sagittarius bears the arrow which pierces the rainbow, for his path leads from the Moon of Yesod to the Sun of Tiphareth. This explanation is highly technical; but this is necessary because the card represents an important scientific formula, which cannot be expressed in language suited to common comprehension.

This card represents the Consummation of the Royal Marriage which took place in Atu VI. The black and white personages are now united in a single androgyne figure. Even the Bees and the Serpents on their robes have made an alliance. The Red Lion has become white, and increased in size and importance, while the White Eagle, similarly expanded, has become red. He has exchanged his red blood for her white gluten. It is impossible to explain these terms to any but advanced students of alchemy.

The equilibrium and counter-change are carried out completely in the figure itself; the white woman has now a black bead; the black king, a white one. She wears the golden crown with a silver band, he, the silver crown with a golden fillet; but the white head on the right is extended in action by a white arm on the left which holds the cup of the white gluten, while the black head on the left has the black arm on the right, holding the lance which has become a torch and pours forth its burning blood. The fire burns up the water; the water extinguishes the fire.”
